If you suspect a leak, or notice discoloration, mold, or other damage, don’t delay in calling in a leak detection plumbing expert. These problems will only get worse with time.
ASAP Drain Guys & Plumbing has been in business in San Diego since 2001 and employs experts in water leak detection, location, and repair. We offer prompt, professional, and courteous service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Leaks are sometimes obvious; you can see water or hear it flowing. But sometimes plumbing leak detection can be difficult. Sometimes it’s hard to be sure there’s actually a problem, let alone locate exactly where it is. It could be anywhere within walls, under the floor, and sometimes even above the ceiling. It could be in the water supply, or the drain and sewer, radiant heating system, or irrigation system.
Never allow a trial-and-error approach. This means going with a water leak detection plumbing specialist, not a general plumber. Anything less means you’re likely to end up with multiple holes in your walls or floors as they try to find the problem based on their “educated guesses.”

Symptoms of Leaks
For hidden leaks, the only symptom may be a sudden jump in your water bill. Other indications include the following:
- dampness or moisture
- low water pressure
- mold or mildew
- warm or cold spots
- water heater running more often, or even running continuously
- water spots or other discoloration on the wall or floor
There also a few more signs we’ll cover under underground leak detection and slab leak detection.
Serious Water Damage
Don’t neglect any of the symptoms. With neglect, damage will only get worse, and can even jeopardize a building’s structure. In addition, there can be health hazards from mold, fungus, and bacteria growth. And of course your water bill will go up, and might even skyrocket due to conservation penalties. So don’t delay calling in a plumbing leak detection exert. Here in San Diego that’s ASAP Drain Guys & Plumbing. If by chance it turns out there’s no leak, you’ll have peace of mind from knowing that’s no longer a worry.
San Diego Water Leak Detection
Leaks can be confirmed by tests using your utility water meter or a pressure test. Pinpointing where the problem is located takes exceptional skill and special equipment. Leak detection plumbing tools include the following:
- Acoustic sensing methods work by draining the pipes and then filling them with a compressed gas. Special microphones, amplifiers, and headphones let the plumber listen for the sound of escaping gas.
- Electronic moisture sensors help identify areas that don’t have visible moisture or discoloration.
- Electromagnetic gear is especially helpful for underground leak detection.
- Thermal imaging and electronic IR thermometers provide extremely accurate measurement of temperature differences caused by a hot or even cold water leak. They’re quick, and often the first choice for wall and slab leak detection.
Underground Leak Detection
Outdoor leaks can be in the building’s water supply line, sewer line, or irrigation system. These plumbing leaks often reveal themselves as wet spots, sometimes as obvious as standing water and sometimes as subtle as differences in lawn or other landscaping growth.
Not surprisingly, a leaking sewer line is often (though not always) accompanied by a foul odor. For these larger diameter lines, underground detection can make use of in-pipe cameras to visually look for cracks, poor joints, roots, or deteriorating pipes.
San Diego Slab Leak Detection
Water leak detection under the floor can be particularly difficult, as the problem will be usually covered by carpet, laminate flooring, or tile. Here in San Diego most homes and commercial buildings use what’s called slab-on-grade construction. The floor is a slab of concrete, so that this type of plumbing leak detection is called slab leak detection. It’s expensive and disruptive to break through the concrete in order to get to the plumbing, so accurately locating the leak is especially important.
